A young cygnet has been safely rescued and released at Willen Lake after reportedly spending four days struggling on land.
MK Swan Rescue has shared the positive outcome after being called to help the youngster, who had been seen walking around away from suitable water for several days.
A concerned member of the public was eventually able to safely secure the cygnet and keep him protected until volunteers from MK Swan Rescue could collect him.
As it was too late in the day to safely relocate and release the bird, the cygnet was taken into care overnight.
The following morning, rescuers transported him to Willen Lake, where his reaction to seeing the water made it clear just how ready he was to get back to where he belonged.
The youngster was reportedly desperate to get into the lake and, after several difficult days spent on land, was finally able to swim, explore his new surroundings and behave naturally again.
The successful rescue has provided a happy ending for the cygnet, but MK Swan Rescue is also using the incident as an important reminder to members of the public.
If a swan or cygnet is spotted somewhere it clearly should not be, particularly if it appears grounded, stranded or is away from suitable water, people are encouraged to seek advice rather than waiting several days to see whether the situation resolves itself.
MK Swan Rescue is a volunteer-led organisation helping swans and other waterfowl across Milton Keynes and the surrounding area.
Members of the public who are concerned about a swan can contact MK Swan Rescue on 07340 227005.
The organisation also relies on public support to help fund rescues, transport, overnight care and the other costs involved in looking after birds in need.
Donations can be made through the MK Swan Rescue website, while supporters can also contribute items through the organisation's Amazon wishlist.
After four days spent struggling on land, this particular rescue thankfully ended exactly where a young swan belongs: safely back on the water.
