A brand new community festival celebrating Wolverton's rich industrial heritage is set to take place this September, with the inaugural Canal and Rail Festival arriving at Wolverton Park on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2026.
As part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days programme, the festival will be completely free to attend, inviting residents and visitors to discover the unique canal and railway history that helped shape Wolverton and Milton Keynes.
The weekend will bring together heritage, community groups, local organisations, entertainment and family-friendly activities, creating a celebration of the area's past while showcasing the people and organisations that continue to keep its history alive today.
Floating Market Along the Grand Union Canal
One of the festival's highlights will be the Floating Market, organised by the Roving Canal Traders Association, which will run along the canal throughout both days.
Visitors can browse a fantastic selection of floating craft and market boats, offering handmade gifts, unique products and artisan goods in a truly picturesque setting.
There will also be the opportunity to experience the waterways from a different perspective, with Electra, the UK's pioneering all-electric canal boat, offering heritage cruises throughout the weekend. Places can be booked online in advance.
Along the towpath, visitors can meet volunteers and learn more about the region's waterways from organisations including:
Inland Waterways Association
Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway
Buckingham Canal Society
Sunday Brings the Festival to Full Steam
On Sunday 13 September, activities expand into the Railway Sports Ground at Lonsdale, Wolverton Park, where the festival comes alive with an even bigger programme.
