A new zebra crossing has been installed outside Fairfields Primary School on Apollo Avenue as part of a wider package of road safety improvements in the area.
The crossing was completed during the summer holidays by Smiths Construction, helping to avoid disruption during the school term and ensuring the new safety measures were in place in time for pupils returning for the new academic year.
The project was delivered in just 12 weeks, less than half the usual timeframe.
Alongside the new zebra crossing, additional traffic-calming measures have also been introduced on the approach to the school. These include speed cushions and a new 20mph speed limit.
The work forms part of wider changes linked to the ongoing Apollo Avenue link road development.
Fairfields Primary School was involved throughout the project, with Urban&Civic and Smiths meeting with the school to explain the new road layout and continuing to provide updates while the work was taking place.
Jordan Payne, Communications & Partnerships Manager at Urban&Civic, said:
“We’re very pleased to have been able to install this new zebra crossing ahead of the start of the new academic year, alongside our partners at Milton Keynes City Council. Getting children to school in a safer, more convenient way is a real priority for us, and has come directly from our work engaging with partners at Fairfields Primary School and the council.”
Cllr Kerrie Bradburn, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said the crossing forms part of the council’s wider work to improve road safety across Milton Keynes.
She said:
“We’re committed to making roads across Milton Keynes safer, and areas around schools are particularly important. I’m delighted this new zebra crossing has been installed on Apollo Avenue, providing a safe place to cross in this development area. Installations like this in new areas help support our wider-city approach to reducing speeds and creating safer journeys. It’s great to see these improvements in place for pupils and families at Fairfields Primary School.”
Ian McNulty, Project Manager at Smiths, added:
“Our team are delighted to have completed the new zebra crossing outside of Fairfields school. We’re proud to deliver quality road improvements that give parents and pupils more peace of mind during their daily journeys.”
The new crossing is intended to make journeys to and from Fairfields Primary School safer for pupils and families, while the additional traffic-calming measures aim to reduce speeds around the school.
