A Family Affair: Brian Conley Brings Christmas Magic to Milton Keynes Theatre

by Shahnaz (Shiny) Hussain

I was absolutely over the moon to learn that Brian Conley will headline this year’s Milton Keynes Theatre pantomime in Goldilocks. A true national treasure and one of Britain’s finest old-school entertainers, Brian is the complete package — he sings, dances, cracks jokes, and has that rare ability to connect with audiences of all ages. From toddlers to grandparents, everyone feels part of the fun. He’s a master of his craft — a performer from a golden era, and the kind of all-round entertainer you just don’t see enough of today.

Interviewing Brian was an absolute joy. Warm, funny, and irresistibly down-to-earth, he had me laughing before I’d even asked my first question. His enthusiasm is genuine, and his excitement about bringing this year’s show to Milton Keynes is infectious. He spoke fondly of how welcome both he and his daughter, Lucy Conley, always feel in Milton Keynes. Lucy, who co-stars in the production and even wrote some of the songs, was equally charming — full of energy, humour, and admiration for her dad. Their chemistry is wonderful to watch, and this year’s panto is clearly a labour of love.

Brian stars as Billy Barnum, Goldilocks’ dad, with Lucy playing Goldilocks — but this isn’t your traditional bedtime tale. Expect a fresh, funny, fast-paced twist packed with comedy, dazzling routines, and plenty of audience participation. And in true Milton Keynes style, there might even be a cameo from the town’s famous delivery robot!

This really is a family affair. Lucy grew up spending her Christmas holidays backstage, watching her dad perform and soaking up the magic of theatre. Her first panto role was as Baby Bear, and now, sharing the stage with Brian, it feels like the perfect full circle. Brian’s wife, and the rest of the family join them during the run, ensuring that even amid the festive madness, they stay grounded and connected. The Conleys get Christmas Day off, but their celebrations start early — their tree goes up on 1st November, followed by an endless stream of Christmas films and cosy family time between shows.

Joining the Conleys on stage are two of Brian’s close friends — Gary Milner and David Robbins — both bringing their own sparkle to the show.

Gary Milner plays the deliciously dastardly Baron von Blackheart, the show’s larger-than-life villain. With smoky black eyes, a whip, and a circus full of caged animals, he’s every inch the perfect panto baddy. “Baddies are so much fun,” he laughs. “And I can’t wait to play against Brian’s goody two-shoes character!” Although Gary and Brian have known each other for years, this is their first panto together, and Gary couldn’t be more excited. “Panto’s a living, breathing thing — it moves with the audience,” he says. He’s full of admiration for Brian too: “There’s a real freedom in the way he works. He’s the best at what he does — quick, charming, brilliant with physical comedy and timing… just not very good looking!”

Meanwhile, David Robbins brings his own magic as Dame Betty Barnum — a role he describes as “so much more than a man in a dress.” For many children, the dame is their first taste of live theatre, and David loves that sense of connection. “Once the makeup and costume go on, the Dame comes alive — she’s mumsy, whacky, warm, and full of fun.” With up to 18 fabulous costumes, all designed and made by David himself, he’s a true showman. Through his own costume and wig company, he now creates looks for Dames across the country. Having worked with Brian for years, he says joining this production was an easy yes. “Variety is the heartbeat of panto,” David says. “And people like Brian are the glue that keep it alive.”

Interviewing Brian, Lucy, Gary, and David was an absolute pleasure — three lovely, talented people who clearly adore what they do. Brian, in particular, is a reminder that behind the showbiz sparkle is a man who deeply loves his craft, his audience, and his family. His warmth is effortless, his humour natural, and his passion unmistakable.

This year’s Goldilocks and the Three Bears at Milton Keynes Theatre promises a spectacular blend of laughter, music, mischief, and heart — the perfect way to kick off the festive season. With Brian and Lucy Conley at the helm, it’s guaranteed to be pure joy from start to finish.
