Milton Keynes, UK – 14th May 2025 – This Mental Health Awareness Week, the theme focuses on something deeply human - the importance of connection and belonging for mental health and wellbeing.

In a world where hybrid work, freelancing, and digital communication often replace face-to-face interaction, many people find themselves working in silos, disconnected from the sense of community that helps us thrive.
At Unity Place, this sense of community is brought to life through the presence of x+why, a purpose-led workspace provider based within Unity Place itself. While some may come simply to rent a workspace, they become part of something far greater - a thriving professional community where wellbeing is prioritised and meaningful connections are nurtured. Alongside flexible office spaces and shared work environments, members, along with Unity Place and Santander employees - have exclusive access to the Wellness Suite - a dedicated space to reset, recharge, and reconnect with themselves and those around them.
Bethany English, Health Suite Manager and certified breathwork facilitator, plays a vital role in this community. She works directly with Unity Place members and employees, offering practical breathing workshops that help people re-energise, overcome anxiety, and bring greater presence to their work and relationships.
With new 2025 data from Instant Offices revealing that high workloads, unpaid overtime, and the rising cost of living are fuelling a mental health crisis in the workplace, finding small yet powerful ways to regain balance has never been more important. “People often underestimate the power of breath,” says Bethany. “A breathing exercise can take no longer than reaching for a cup of coffee, yet it can reset your nervous system and change the course of your day.”
To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, Bethany is sharing one of her most effective tools: Box Breathing. Used by high performers from athletes to Navy SEALs, this simple technique calms the nervous system and brings clarity in moments that can otherwise feel overwhelming.
“Breathing exercises like Box Breathing activate the parasympathetic nervous system which is the body’s natural antidote to stress,” Bethany concludes. “In just a few minutes, the heart rate slows, anxiety eases, and a sense of calm and connection returns. Whether preparing for a challenging meeting or simply feeling the weight of a long day, taking a moment to breathe may be the most valuable tool at your fingertips.”

What is Box Breathing?
Also known as Square Breathing, this method has been used by everyone from athletes to Navy SEALs to manage stress, calm the nervous system, and regain focus. It’s simple, grounding, and you can do it anywhere, whether you're prepping for a big meeting or trying to reset after a long day.
How to Practice Box Breathing
You can do this seated at your desk, standing, or lying down, whatever’s most comfortable.
1. Inhale through your nose for a count of 4
2. Hold your breath for a count of 4
3. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 4
4. Hold again for a count of 4
Repeat this cycle 4–6 times (or more if you like) and notice how your body starts to soften, and your mind feels a little clearer.
