City Council's winter activity week delivers free meals and festive fun to local families

Milton Keynes City Council funded around 15,000 hours of free activities plus healthy meals and snacks for children who usually receive free school meals and their families through the Christmas school holidays.

The City Council’s winter activity programme ran for the first week of the school holidays and offered indoor and outdoor events in more than 20 locations across MK.

The City Council worked with local organisations such as schools, clubs and charities to provide sports, music, cookery, education and crafts, with children and young people learning skills from painting and cookery to boxing and film-making. More than 3,700 individual sessions took place with each including a free healthy meal and snack.

“I’d like to thank all those providers of activities and fresh food who worked with us to deliver the winter activity week. There were some lovely events that I know were enjoyed by both young people and their families. This is part of our larger programme for children and families who are struggling, and we’ll keep looking at ways we can support families in the year ahead.” - Cllr Zoe Nolan, Cabinet Member for Children and Families

The winter activity week followed the City Council’s highly popular Summer of Play and spring activity week during which families took part in a total of 30,000 activity sessions with free meals for children and young people.
