Milton Keynes Celebrates Refugee Week 2025: “Community as a Superpower”

Milton Keynes is gearing up to celebrate Refugee Week 2025 from 15 to 22 June with a vibrant programme of events designed to celebrate the strength, resilience, and creativity of refugee communities.

This year’s national theme, “Community as a Superpower,” shines a light on the incredible power of unity and support that transforms lives and builds stronger communities.

Local organisations have come together to deliver a rich programme that includes film screenings, festivals, workshops, and community gatherings — all designed to foster understanding, raise awareness, and celebrate the contributions of refugees in Milton Keynes and beyond.

Key highlights include:

● Art in the Park Festival

Hosted by MK Islamic Arts and Culture (MKIAC), this festival takes place on 21 June at Campbell Park (afternoon/evening). It features music, dance, and art performances celebrating the cultural contributions and resilience of refugees.

● Yoga Festival

Run by Yoga for Health Alliance, the Yoga Festival will be held on the morning of 21 June at Willen Lake. This event offers a peaceful space to connect and reflect, emphasising wellbeing and community spirit.

● Film Screenings at MK Gallery

On 17 June (7:00–9:30pm), enjoy a powerful selection of short films exploring refugee and forced migrant experiences, including locally produced stories by Living Archive and MKIAC.

● On 22 June (2:00–4:00pm), watch Fremont, a moving drama about a young Afghan woman starting a new life in California, with a special reading by author Sonia Saada and a discussion guided by Viktoriya Shtanko at Ukraine Appeal . Tickets for these screenings are free and available here.

This year, local groups such as the Ukrainian Appeal and UK Welcomes Refugees will also be marking Refugee Week with their own activities, reflecting the shared commitment to welcome and support new arrivals.

Community groups and organisations are encouraged to register their own events on the official Refugee Week website (refugeeweek.org.uk) to join this collective celebration and help spread the message of inclusion and belonging.
