MK Friends: Supporting Patients for Over 45 Years

For over 45 years, MK Friends has been a vital part of the Milton Keynes University Hospital community.

As an independent charity, its mission is to enhance the experience of patients, families, and staff by funding services and items that go beyond NHS provision. Among its many contributions, the charity offers a daily lifeline for patients and staff alike: through its on-site shop and ward trolley service.

Supported by volunteers, the MK Friends trolley travels through the hospital wards delivering newspapers, snacks, drinks, and essential items directly to patients’ bedsides. For those unable to leave their ward, the trolley offers more than just convenience; it brings comfort, dignity, and a welcome moment of connection. Patients often express relief at being able to purchase personal items they may not have brought with them, or enjoy a small treat during their stay.

The charity also runs a shop on-site, offering freshly prepared food with locally sourced ingredients, along with a range of products appreciated by both staff and patients. All profits go back into supporting the hospital.

Phil, a retired postman, volunteers with MK Friends to give back to the community. “As a retired postman, I saw volunteering as a great way to stay active and support the hospital. It’s rewarding to help patients and also a lovely way to meet people,” Phil shared.MK Friends supports the hospital in many other ways too, from funding garden upgrades at the Cancer Centre to organising community events like quiz nights and lotteries. Their mission is simple yet powerful: to support patients and their families across Milton Keynes Hospital and the wider community.
