Today we turn our attention to Headway Milton Keynes. Another fantastic charity that do lots of work to support young people in our local community. Thankyou MK Charities for the heads up!
Headway Milton Keynes supports adults with an acquired brain injury and their families by providing rehabilitation opportunities and the chance to socialise with others facing similar challenges.
They provide a range of services which promote rehabilitation, enablement and learning. These include:
Development of cognitive, communicative, physical, social and emotional skills
Developing skills for daily living such as budgeting and nutrition
Preparation for returning to education, volunteering or work
Practical sessions to increase participation in meaningful activities such as exercise, art and music.
Through these we aim to promote independence, well-being and increase confidence, socialisation and inclusion within the local community.
During the lockdown they were forced to close their centre and stop face-to-face services. They set up online sessions of cognitive skills, art and social activities and phone support services. To enable their clients to continue to socialise we set up a private facebook group to chat, share ideas and motivate each other. They supported one client, with a talent for music, to set up a radio station for their clients once a week called ‘Radio Spoons’. He would take requests for songs and play them to the group. This brought much fun and laughter to the group.
