City Councillor hits the right note after donating dozens of musical instruments to local school

A City Councillor has hit the right note after his annual ward grant meant he could donate dozens of musical instruments to Southwood School in Conniburrow.

Councillor Ben Nolan, who represents Central Milton Keynes ward, purchased glockenspiels for an entire school classroom through his ward grant – a pot of money which councillors can use on initiatives within their ward.

The purchase means that 30 Year 6 pupils will each have their own percussion instrument to play during music lessons, ensuring that the teachers can engage with the children on an individual level.

Cllr Ben Nolan said: “Music lessons are a key part of every child’s school experience as they’re educational and fun at the same time. It’s great that the pupils will now be able to look forward to their music lessons knowing they’ve got their own instrument to play.

“Last month I was lucky enough to watch Year 6 perform a song using the glockenspiels and was very impressed! I hope the instruments will benefit hundreds more schoolchildren in the years to come.”

During the school visit, the Year 6 class presented Cllr Nolan with a handmade ‘thank you’ booklet complete with messages from each of the pupils.

“Thank you so much for the musical instruments, said one child, “They will help us in our music lessons, and we can experience different instruments. It will be very fun!”

Another added: “Thank you so much for handing us the glockenspiels. I really like them because they have lots of notes and sound really good.”
