Passengers travelling through Milton Keynes are being advised to check their journeys in advance ahead of planned railway engineering works taking place across Britain during the May bank holidays.

While the majority of the rail network will remain open for both passengers and freight, Network Rail has confirmed that essential upgrades and maintenance will affect some key routes. Travellers using Milton Keynes Central railway stationmay experience knock-on disruption, particularly on services connecting to London, the North, and cross-country routes.
The works form part of a £140.5 million investment programme spanning 568 projects, aimed at improving reliability and future performance of the railway.
The early May bank holiday, running from Saturday 2 May to Monday 4 May, will see significant disruption on parts of the East Coast Main Line, with rail replacement buses operating between York and Darlington. In London, major station closures and diversions will affect routes into Charing Cross and Cannon Street, with services redirected to alternative terminals.
Later in the month, between Saturday 23 May and Monday 25 May, further works will continue on the East Coast Main Line, alongside major upgrades on the Transpennine route between Manchester, Huddersfield and Leeds. Additional disruption is expected on the Great Western Main Line, where buses will replace trains between Newport and Bristol Parkway, and on Thameslink services through central London.
Although Milton Keynes itself is not directly listed among the primary engineering locations, its position on the West Coast Main Line means services may be indirectly impacted by wider network changes, timetable alterations, and increased passenger demand on alternative routes.
A spokesperson for Network Rail said that bank holidays provide a valuable opportunity to carry out larger scale improvements while passenger numbers are lower. However, passengers are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and check for the latest travel updates before setting off.
Travellers can access the most up-to-date information via National Rail Enquiries or through their train operator to avoid unexpected delays during the holiday period.
