Melting Pot and the Birmingham Rep are proud to announce a thrilling new staging of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, based on Mark Haddon’s internationally acclaimed novel that has captivated over 10 million readers worldwide and inspired the groundbreaking National Theatre production.

Adapted by Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens and directed by Ned Bennett, this brand-new production begins a major UK tour, arriving at Milton Keynes Theatre from Tuesday 6 to Saturday 10 October 2026.

A story of mystery, courage and discovery

Christopher Boone has an extraordinary mind—exceptional at maths but ill at ease with everyday life. When a neighbour’s dog is found dead, Christopher is suspected of the crime. Determined to prove his innocence, he becomes both detective and suspect in a mystery that leads him to uncover truths far closer to home. What begins as a search for answers becomes a powerful journey of self-discovery, courage, and independence.

Inventive, gripping, and deeply moving, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time fuses the intrigue of a detective story with the heart of a coming-of-age tale — a truly unforgettable theatrical event.

Creators’ reflections

Playwright Simon Stephens says:

“The journey of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has been extraordinary — from church halls to enormous theatres, from school drama clubs to Wembley Way. I’m thrilled Christopher Boone is setting out across the UK once again. His determination and bravery feel more relevant than ever. I’ve wanted to work with Ned Bennett for years, and I couldn’t be happier that he’s reimagining this play for the 2020s.”

Director Ned Bennett adds:

“I’m absolutely thrilled to direct The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Mark Haddon’s story is tender, mischievous, and profoundly human — a celebration of courage and imagination. It’s an honour to collaborate with Simon Stephens, Melting Pot, and the Birmingham Rep to bring this iconic play vividly to life for a new generation of audiences.”

Simon Friend, Producer at Melting Pot, comments:

“Like so many, I fell in love with Mark Haddon’s novel the moment I read it. Simon’s stage adaptation is exhilarating — theatrical, emotional, and deeply affecting for audiences young and old. We’re honoured to produce the first new staging since the original landmark production, with the hugely talented Ned Bennett leading the way.”

Joe Murphy, Artistic Director of the Birmingham Rep, concludes:

“We’re delighted to co-produce this powerful new staging of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It’s inventive, full of heart, and reminds us of the beauty in seeing the world differently. This story continues to challenge, move, and inspire audiences, and we’re proud to help bring it to life once more.”
